WHO WE ARE

Valley Psychological Services

Valley Psychological Services P.C. has located next to one of its best partners Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance. VPS had its genesis in the partnership of Dr. Joseph McCoy (licensed psychologist) with Drs. Matt Johnson and Steve Havener (family physicians) create an environment that allowed for collaborative care for the primary care patient. This partnership was facilitated by the board of Mission Hospital in 1999 to improve the range of services provided to the Mission community. Dr. McCoy remains indebted to their generosity and the seven years they served Mission together.

Valley Psychological Services P.C. is now a multi-practitioner gladly serving the Edinburg/McAllen/Mission area as well as the rest of the Valley. We are located in Edinburg/McAllen next to Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance (DHR). VPS staff serves patients who are admitted to DHR, whether it is for a pre-surgical clearance, helping cope with difficult illnesses or procedures, treatment at Renaissance Behavioral Center, or helping the doctors of Renaissance treat the whole person.

Dr. Joseph McCoy, Ph.D.

is a graduate of the Medical Psychology Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of the nation’s top 10 medical research institutions (when measured by the amount of annual research grant monies received). As a Licensed psychologist he has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from UAB.

Psychologists have the most in-depth training in mental health care of any of the mental health providers. One of Dr. McCoy’s expertise is understanding the role of choices, behaviors, and normal psychological factor’s on health (health psychology). You don’t have to be “crazy” to see a psychologist, but just understand that you have some health problems like depression, tiredness, inattention, relationship difficulties, for example, that you haven’t been able to resolve on your own.

Not taking care of your state of mind and mental health is like saying you’re only going to care of everything in your car except the electrical system; you’ll only take care of the “physical/non-electrical” part of your car. It’s the electrical part that starts your car (you decide to get up or sleep in if you can); It’s the electrical part that powers the lights (you decide what direction you’re taking with your life are you satisfied with that?); It’s the electrical part that recharges the battery (you decide how you recharge your mental battery and your physical battery are you making healthy decisions?); It’s the electrical part that powers the air conditioner and entertainment equipment (you’re electrical system is what leads you to care for yourself and bring pleasure to yourself or not). So you’re crazy if you don’t take care of your mental system.

That’s why I never see a crazy person, because they don’t want to see me. I only see people that want to be healthy–that’s the sanest thing you can do. Another expertise Dr. McCoy has developed is in the diagnosis and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders. He runs a bi-weekly social skills group for several age groups of people with an ASD. Also, he has expertise in evaluating people for trauma/PTSD and treating it through evidence based tecnniques.
